Dear Salon People,
Last week i watched 60 Minutes and was so saddened by the situation of rape in the Congo. I went to the 60Min web site to see what i could do. I found this address (see below) for someone that i could contact. If, after reading the letter from her, you want to do something, too, like donate money for the mosquito bed netting which saves many lives, you can let me know soon. If you want to send me a check made out to her, i can send the money directly to her. I always have trouble using Pay Pay, so for me, i want to just send her the money directly. But, you can go to that Pay Pay site and do it on your own. Let me know if you want to send her money through me. patty

Dear Patty,
Thank you for your email. (It's very encouraging.) As you might have seen on the site, I built the site as a student with Univ. Of Michigan (which is how I met Dr. Cissa Wa Numbe and partnered with him to help UNA-DRC). It was late November when he asked me to help with the bed net campaign as the U.S. contact. (After all that I've learned about D.R. Congo, I was motivated to help.)
You can use the PayPal link for a checking account or credit card donation (on the web site http://www.amanidrc.org/one-net-one-life.htm#support ) <http://www.amanidrc.org/one-net-one-life.htm>
If you'd rather mail a check, you can mail it to me in the U.S. it would be:
D. Western, P.O. Box 4313, Troy, MI 48099
If you'd rather make the check out directly to UNA-DRC, then I would have to mail it to the Congo. (I'm not sure how good the mail system would be in Africa. I would probably send the check to the U.K. partners and ask them to hold it or see if any one is going to the Congo.) Or if you would rather, I can give you an address in the U.K.
I decided last week to go ahead and apply for a 501c3 tax emempt status as I really want to make a huge effort to raise funds for the bed nets campaign. I will be filing for a corporate status; then the IRS tax exempt status takes from 3 to 9 months. At this point, I'm collecting funds with the understanding that I will hand all the monies over to UNA-DRC. Unfortunately, setting up all of this takes time, and we just started this part of the program for the U.S. (UNA-DRC has existed in the Congo for many years.)
All of this began when I started working on this project for graduate school. I'm just a regular citizen who became totally captured by the whole project when I started learning about how dreadful things are in the Congo.
At any rate, could you please let me know if you mail something to the PO Box; then I would be sure to check the box more often than I usually do. If you use PayPal, I would receive an email notice.
Anyway, sorry for the long-winded email. I really appreciate you supporting this effort. It's been very difficult as I'm doing all of this along with my regular homework. Like you probably feel, I'm very motivated to help.
Thank you again,
Best regards,
Diane Western for AmaniDRC.org U of M student
