2. Protest and Vigil: Send an Anti-War Message for the Holidays

Friday, December 21, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Library Plaza, Hennepin and Lagoon Avenues, Minneapolis. The Iraq Moratorium and the General Strike for Peace have launched a national campaign asking that the third Friday of every month be a day for local actions against the war. Join an anti-war protest and vigil to send an anti-war message for the holidays. There will be signs, banners and candles to create a visible anti-war presence on one of the busiest intersections in Minneapolis. As the holiday season approaches, these celebrations of peace are overshadowed by the continuing U.S. war on Iraq. On December 21, people across the country will gather in a variety of ways to call for an end to the war. Initiated by: Iraq Peace Action Coalition; WAMM is a member of the coalition. Annual Solstice celebration led by Twin Cities Reclaiming, with Encore from the Twin Cities Women's Choir. Ritual intention: To embrace the dance of the sun, (full) moon, and the earth, and the music of Coldwater Spring, to re-dedicate our passions to what we want to give back to our communities and the world. 4. Silencing Peacemakers in the Middle East: Anti-Semitism vs. Criticizing


Thursday, December 27, 7:00 p.m. Macalester Plymouth United Church, 1658 Lincoln Avenue, St. Paul. Featuring Cecilie Surasky and local Muslim, Christian and Jewish peace activists. Cecilie is the Communications Director for Jewish Voice for Peace and the editor of MuzzleWatch. Immediately after hearing of the cancellation of Desmond Tutu by the University of St. Thomas, Cecilie led a campaign that resulted in thousands of emails and letters to President Dease. Jewish Voices for Peace is a national grassroots peace organization with over 20,000 supporters and members dedicated to promoting a U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East based on peace, democracy, human rights and respect for international lraq. Muzzlewatch is dedicated to creating an open atmosphere for debate about U.S.-Israel foreign policy by shining a light on incidents that involve pressure, intimidation, and outright censorship of critics of U.S.-Israeli policy. Sponsored by: The National and Global Ministry of Robbinsdale United Church Of Christ and Northwest for Peace. Matthew Vaky performs this hilariously intense one-man show, which he wrote: Jesus Christ has returned to Earth and, being from the Middle East, has been sent to Guantanamo as a terrorist. He has been denied a lawyer and a trial, hasn't been charged, has been sleep deprived and torturedŠand he also has some pretty funny ideas about the Bible and man's inhumanity to man. Vaky is a former member of the Guthrie Acting Company and has written, directed, and acted with many local companies including Mixed Blood, Illusion, Children's Theater, Stepping Stone Theatre, the Fringe Festival, and the Bryant Lake Bowl. A dramatic reading of the life and death of Rachel Corrie, written by Frances Ford, of the War Plays project; directed by Sally Childs. Professional actors read from Rachel's journals and email exchanges. At age 23, Rachel from Olympia, Washington, was run over by a bulldozer in Gaza on March 16, 2003 while trying to protect a Palestinian home from demolition. Anna Baltzer , a Jewish American Columbia graduate, Fullbright scholar, and volunteer with the International Women's Peace Service, is currently touring the U.S. with a presentation and book describing her experiences documenting human rights abuses in the West Bank and supporting Palestinian and Israeli nonviolent resistance to the Occupation. Anna's presentation covers checkpoints, Israeli activism, the Separation Wall, censorship, nonviolent resistance, and other topics rarely covered in mainstream U.S. media.
