so it's the 4th of july. some call it "independence day." ...freedom, the constitution, all that hoo-ha...

however, this tuesday - july 8th, US senators will vote
on whether or not to amend the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act of 1978 (FISA).

and actually, it's frightening.
last wednesday, only 15 senators said that they would vote
against the amendment.
while 80 senators said that they would vote FOR the amendment.

80 senators essentially said that the president is above the law and if
companies break the law at his request, then all we need to do is CHANGE
the law. effectively, they will grant immunity to george bush, at&t,
verizon wireless and everyone else involved in the illegal wire-tapping of
our phones, reading of our emails and who knows what else?
these companies handed over huge amounts of information to the bush
administration, potentially millions of emails and phone calls and more,
without getting a warrant.

that's insane!
15 to 80!

so i don't know whether or not you believe that your voice makes a difference.
sometimes i don't know whether or not i do.
but supposedly we live in a democracy (by the people, for the people)
and our elected officials are supposed to uphold the constitution -
which, by the way, explicitly states in its fourth amendment that the
government needs a warrant to conduct a search (that includes wire-tapping).

so shouldn't we at least CALL them BEFORE THEY VOTE and say
"hey, i'm totally appalled by your plan to vote yes. and i think that you should
change your mind and VOTE NO instead on tuesday."
i mean, if we totally disagree, isn't that the LEAST that we could do?

maybe it doesn't make a difference whether or not we call.
maybe it does.
but this is serious.
and i know that i'm only one person, but so are you. and you. and you.
and your friends. and their friends, too.

below i've created a list of some possible options for getting involved
if you haven't totally given up on this country yet.

take care,
have a great "long" weekend
and may the force be with you!
much love,
m

and let me know what you think about all this if you feel like it... i'd love to hear
from you!

ps - i've decided to send out occasional "political" emails to my mailing list.
please know that this is simply me as a human being reaching out to you
as a human being because i believe that you might also genuinely care about
these issues and might genuinely be looking for a way to make your voice heard.
i know that i am. i'm definitely not putting together an email every time that i get
a message about some petition to sign or phone-call to make... that would be
multiple times a day, every day. i'm selecting and crafting these carefully -
when i think that it really counts. if you'd rather not receive these emails, simply
reply with "remove political" in the subject line. thanks y'all...

for a complete list of WHO said HOW they will vote on tuesday, click here:
http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/ roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=2&vote=00158

1.) minnesota senators (both of whom said that they will vote yes)
norm coleman (202) 224-5641
amy klobuchar (202) 224-3244

2.) democratic presidential nominee senator barack obama - who changed his mind,
went back on his word and recently said that he will vote yes (202) 224-2854

3.) for non-minnesota senators' phone numbers,
select your state from the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner at:
http://www.senate.gov/index.htm

4.) send an email to your senators through the ACLU website here
http://action.aclu.org/site/ Advocacy?pagename=homepage&id=987&page=UserAction&s_subsrc=artaf

5.) talk to people - it's the fourth of july weekend!
download and print this petition, collect signatures and then fax or scan/email them
toPeople for the American Way. (they'll get them to the appropriate senators before
the July 8th vote)

6.) make your own fliers with your senators' phone numbers and give them to folks this
weekend... hmmmmm, where could you find a whole bunch of people? fireworks, perhaps?
make it EASY for people to get involved!

7.) use these talking points to spread the word to your friends and family and ask them
to join you in making some noise about this

8.) call in to talk radio shows (right-wing, left-wing, neutral, whatever -- flood the airwaves)

9.) write a letter to the editor of one of your local papers

without enough public outcry, the senate will let these phone companies off the hook and
let bush and future presidents keep spying on americans without getting a warrant... and
whatever else they want to do whenever they think that they're above the law. that's
plain dangerous. maybe they'll listen - if enough of us speak up... maybe not.

ciao for now,
m
