Peace Calendar for October 13, 2007

EDITOR'S RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WEEK:
Movie: "In the Valley of Elah"
Series: 5 weeks re religions and violence, every Monday
For folks in Southern MN: Tim Walz's Iraq forums this afternoon
Peace rally: This Friday at Peavey Plaza, downtown Mpls

BUS TRIP HEADS UP: Every year, the Vets for Peace takes a bus trip to a
Georgia vigil to close the School of the Americas, a torture-training
facility operated by the US military. It is the singingest and most
spiritual of protest actions I know. The bus leaves the morning of 11/16,
returning the evening of 11/19, with a night at a motel there. Cost is $200
for the bus, plus motel ($25 and up) and food. They are down to the last
dozen seats. Contact Jim Steinhagen at 612-722-1112, or just send a check
to Veterans for Peace c/o Jim at 3300 Edmond Blvd, Mpls 55406.

10/5 to 10/11, film "In the Valley of Elah" about soldier on 1st weekend
back after Iraq who goes missing and is reported AWOL (Gone from the Lagoon,
but check the paper for mainstream locations). (Brief review: a tense and
nuanced film that contrasts the wrenching changes that war makes on warriors
and those around them. Grizzly at times, but highly recommended.)

9/21 to 10/28, free exhibit of photos, paintings and drawing on war themes
"War Mediated/I Will Follow You into the Dark," Mpls Institute of Art, 2400
- 3rd Ave S, Mpls. http://www.artsmia.org or 612-8870-3131. (The Strib
review says that "the actors in these denatured dramas seem always to be
gazing into a void, confronting not some mortal peril, but nothingness.")

10/8 to 10/17, help needed to leaflet outside metro schools concerning the
November 16th Walkout, 8 to 8:45 am and 2:30 to 3:30 pm in the Mpls schools,
1:30 to 2:30 pm in the St Paul schools. Contact Tyrus at 651-210-5342 if
you can help.

10/12 to 10/17, 7:15 and 9 pm, documentary "The Devil Came on Horseback"
