 HI All,

I heard from someone that this book is realllllly depressing. I have never read it. It was Steve's selection, and i always think he has great ideas about films and books. Here is his answer to the depressing book. Read it and come and discuss it on the last Tuesday of Jan. 2010.

The person is right. It is depressing. But what does it have to say about America? So much of the make up of the American character comes out of Puritan New England. Wharton is up to something in this book. Themes of isolation, lack of education, lack of access and love of the arts--how does all that reflect on our relationships with each other i.e. men and women? Patty, put out these emails and you may stir up some interest in the book. Wharton's writing is simple, beautiful and eloquent. This book is often overlooked. Stephen

Hi, I thought i should give you the name of the Little Book of the
Odd Month Club that we chose to read and then discuss on the last
Tuesday of January. It is the little novel by Edith Wharton, "Ethan
Frome."
