This workshop will introduce participants to the geographic tools available online, with a focus on geotagging and commonly used mapping sites. In addition to being easy to use, these tools can be a powerful way of displaying more than simply driving directions. Geotagging, for instance, allows users to link media or data to a specific point on a map, easily providing geographic context to something like a series of photos or videos. We will also present a brief overview of some of the full-featured open-source GIS programs now available, for those participants with more advanced uses in mind. Online Mapping and Geotagging FREE WORKSHOP Monday, March 31st 7:00 - 8:30 PM Rondo Community Outreach Library 461 North Dale University & Dale, St. Paul --------7 of 14-------- From: Lydia Howell <lhowell [at] visi.com> Subject: Transgender rights 3.31 7pm Please join us for a discussion about transgender rights and the campaign for a trans-inclusive ENDA with Mara Keisling, Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality! Mara will share the inside story of what really happened in the recent Congressional battle regarding ENDA, and how United ENDA was able to create the one of the most amazing advocacy campaigns in LGBT history. Most importantly, Mara will discuss what NCTE is doing nationally for transgender rights, and what we can all do at a local level. For more information, call 651-222-3242 or friends [at] thefriends.org The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library presents author Warren Read, reading from his debut book and family story, The Lyncher in Me: A Search for Redemption in the Face of History. In June 1920, in Duluth, a mob of over 10,000 charged the police station, inflamed by rumors that black circus workers had raped a white teenage girl - charges later proven false. Three men were dragged from their cells and lynched in front of the cheering crowd. Over 80 years later, Read discovered that his beloved great-grandfather had incited the deadly riot years before. In this poignant memoir, Read explores the victims and perpetrators of the heinous crime, and investigates the impact of the long-held secret on his family, calling even himself to task. [There is no such thing as a free lynch.] Listen to excerpts from The Lyncher in Me on Tuesday, April 1, at 7 p.m., at the Merriam Park Branch Library, 1831 Marshall Avenue, Saint Paul. Warren Read is a writer and elementary school teacher on Bainbridge Island, Washington. This is his first book. This program is free and open to the public. Contact The Friends at 651/222-3242 or visit www.thefriends.org for more information. --------14 of 14-------- From: Charles Underwood <charleyunderwood [at] hotmail.com> Subject: Israel/Zionism 4.01 7:30pm Tuesday, 4/1, 7:30 pm, Ron Krebs examines the tension between Israel as Jewish homeland and Israel as democratic nation-state in "Does Israel have a Future as a Jewish State?"
