Calling all allies in the fight for democracy and against corporate
welfare......

This is it - the last weekend to stop the Twins stadium tax.  It CAN still
be done - but YOU have to do it.  We have the literature, we have the
plan, and we're having an effect on the County Commissioner races.  What
we need is lots more people for lit dropping - delivering literature door
to door.

We want to make a big push this weekend.  But you can start sooner, any
time.  And Monday isn't too late if you have time off.  But after Tuesday
it's too late...  If we don't get rid of at least one County Commissioner
(Opat, Stenglein, or McLaughlin), you, I, and one million county residents
will be stuck with this tax for 30 YEARS!

I hope by now I have convinced you that this is an important issue.  It's
not just the tax - though over $1 BILLION dollars is a lot of money. It's
about priorities - about what else could be done with that money that
would really benefit the people of Hennepin County, especially those who
need it the most.  (As opposed to the second richest man in the state - a
multi-billionaire)  It's about looking to the challenges of the future -
with resource depletion, global warming, and huge personal and public
debt, this is no time to lock us into a 30 year commitment to subsidizing
private professional sports teams.  And it's about democracy - they knew
we wouldn't vote for this, so they got a special exemption from having a
referendum, and they pushed this through with secretive back-room
maneuvering.

The election on November 7th is our first, last, and only chance for the
public as a whole to have their say and stop this with their votes.  And
we can - if we vote out one or more of the Commissioners, the County Board
will have a majority AGAINST the stadium tax, and they can overturn it!

I believe our literature is very effective.  It is grassroots, it is hard-
hitting, it is educational, and it is being read.  It stands out from the
mountain of glossy full-color oversize postcards that people are getting
from all the candidates.  It reminds people of an issue that they are
already angry about, and it directs that anger.  It will be remembered in
the voting booth.

For more info on the races, and reminders on why this all matters, I've
copied some excerpts from previous emails at the end of this one.  AND, if
you need just a little more convincing that this is not just about
revenge, here's an article from today's StarTribune:
http://www.startribune.com/510/story/783138.html The Vikings are looking
at a new stadium in Minneapolis, and guess what: they "will need a
financial partner in either community's government to make this work."
That "financial partner" is you and me - but we aren't partners.  We are
forced to pay, but only the team owner profits from our "investment".  A
side- bar related article is titled: "Face it: Only Minneapolis can afford
to build a stadium."  Oh, yeah??  Well Zygi Wilf can damn well afford it
better than the PEOPLE of Minneapolis - and that's what he is talking
about: you, me, and everyone else in our city, many of them poor, and some
of them destitute.  How dare they even SAY such a thing?

But if we don't defeat these County Commissioners, they will not just say
it, but DO it - we will have shown that we are powerless to stop them; we
will have shown that greed wins.

County Commissioner districts are large (about 55 precincts each). We need
a large turnout this weekend to cover the precincts we have not yet
reached.

So here's the plan:

You can pick up literature, instructions, and a map at any time if you
make arrangements by calling me, Dave Bicking, at 612-276- 1213 (for all 3
Commissioner's districts lit), or Julie, at 763-476- 7099 (for lit and
maps for Stenglein's and Opat's districts).  We'll suggest areas of
highest priority, but it's your choice where you want to go.

We will also be having scheduled pick-up times this weekend:
SATURDAY and SUNDAY
Mornings:  9 am to 10 am
Afternoons:  1 pm to 2 pm

TWO lit-drop pick-up locations:

Easy to find:  right up the street from the Holiday Station Store on
the I-394 frontage road.

Easy to find:  Two blocks south of the YWCA on Lake Street  --

Someone will be on-site during the scheduled times to give you lit and a
map and get you started.  If possible PLEASE let us know if you are coming
-- this helps us judge how much lit we will need, and to have the map
ready for the area YOU prefer.  Call Dave at 612-276-1213 if you can
commit ahead of time.  Of course, last- minute, spontaneous volunteers
will be welcome.

We will be printing literature as needed, right through Monday.  The more
you can help us, the more literature we will print.  Which brings me to my
last point.  Though this is truly a grassroots volunteer effort, it still
takes money to buy paper and ink.  Please donate what you can to:

This effort is being organized by Citizens Against Stadium Taxes (CAST, as
in "cast your ballot").  It is independent of any candidate or party.
Its role is to work for the defeat of these three County Commissioners
(Opat, Stenglein, and McLaughlin) in this election cycle - primary and
general elections.  CAST is printing the literature and organizing its
distribution this weekend.  A separate, new group is required by campaign
finance laws.  You can see our financial reports on the Hennepin County
website (hennepin.us) under "Campaign Finance".

Lit dropping is easy and it's FUN - so we have been told by a number of
our volunteers.  Unlike many of the candidates' volunteers who are
littering your doorsteps, we are welcomed - people are happy to see us,
and we receive a lot of support and heart-felt thanks for the work we are
doing.  You can do it on your own schedule.  We provide the lit and the
instructions, and a map of the area you choose to cover.  Some people
prefer going alone, others prefer a partner, especially if you are new to
this.  We may be able to find a partner for you if you wish.

This is not like door-knocking where you actually have to talk to people.
We just need you to go from door to door leaving our literature. You can
be shy.  Or if you are more outgoing, you may have some great
conversations with people who are out and about, or in their yards.  In
suburban areas, you can drive from house to house, leaving literature
tucked into the newspaper boxes. So you don't even have to be athletic!

The vote for the Twins stadium tax was 4 to 3, with Commissioners Mike
Opat, Mark Stenglein, Randy Johnson, and Peter McLaughlin voting for it.
Half of the County Board is up for election each two years.  Fortunately,
Opat, Stenglein, and McLaughlin are running this year.  (Gail Dorfman, who
voted against the tax, is also up for election, but has no challengers -
coincidence??)  The primary election in this non-partisan race narrowed
the field to two candidates in each race.  Opat is running against Mary
O'Connor, a conservative libertarian who is currently on the Brooklyn
Center City Council.  Stenglein is running against Greg Gray, a former
state legislator who is DFL endorsed.  And McLaughlin is running against
Farheem Hakeem, a Green Party endorsed candidate who is running a very
strong campaign.

Strategically, our highest priority is targeting Mark Stenglein, District
2 (north and NE Mpls, Golden Valley and Plymouth).  He is the most
vulnerable of the three.  We also have a chance of defeating Peter
McLaughlin, District 4 (South Mpls, east of I-35W, plus north of the river
and south of E. Hennepin).  Strategically, our lowest priority is Mike
Opat, District 1 (NW tip of Mpls, Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park,
Robbinsdale, and most of Crystal and New Hope).  He is the least likely to
lose - though we shouldn't give up hope.

BUT, it's up to you where you want to go, depending on where you live, and
which Commissioner you are most passionate about. Just tell us, and we'll
assign you an area with good voter turnout.

The stakes are VERY high:

Here's what happens if we can defeat one or more of these Commissioners:
The sales tax for the stadium will start on January 1, 2007.  The new
County Board, with any new members, takes office on January 2.  They CAN
repeal the tax!  (It would probably remain in effect for three months,
until the State ends it.)  The municipal bonds, the interest on which will
be paid by the tax revenues, are not going to be sold until March or April
of 2007.  If the stadium decision is reversed at the beginning of next
year, those bonds won't be sold, and we won't be locked into a 30-year tax
to repay them.  Actual construction on the stadium, as well as the land
purchase, won't be happening until later in the spring.  So that can be
avoided as well.  THIS ELECTION IS THE LAST OPPORTUNITY TO AVOID THIS
30-YEAR TAX.  If we can stop it, we can spend our public resources on
PUBLIC purposes rather than on corporate welfare for a multi-billionaire!

Here's what happens if all three of these Commissioners are re-
elected:
The stadium proceeds.  But even more importantly, we will have sent a
terrible message: a green light for even more abuse.  More public money
for private profit, and more abuse of our democratic rights.  If they can
get away with this, just think what other, less publicized rip-offs they
can get away with.  And there may be some big ones:  there is already talk
of the Vikings building (or re- building) a stadium in Minneapolis.  How
much of our money, our public resources, might be stolen for THAT purpose?
It is dangerous to leave these guys in control of our finances.

We can not let all three of these Commissioners win re-election!!!  They
took away our right to a referendum.  This election is the only
"referendum" we will get.  It is a very imperfect referendum:  the stadium
issue is thrown in with all the other issues and candidate personality and
character issues, rather than being a separate ballot question.  It is
also very hard to unseat incumbents.  Incumbents have a huge money
advantage, and media advantage (especially when they so faithfully serve
the interests of the rich).  And it is hard for opposition candidates to
put forward the incredible time and dedication to run for office.

So defeating these incumbents is an uphill battle, even in spite of the
public opposition to the stadium tax, in spite of the anger that is out
there.  BUT WE MUST DO IT!

[Stuff billionaire freeloader where the sun doesn't shine! A jerk like
Pohlad getting this far proves there is something *drastically* wrong with
local, county, and state government. -ed]

Many of you have probably already heard the recent comments from Hatch,
Pawlenty and other candidates regarding the topic of immigration.
Neither Hatch nor Pawlenty support the Dream Act.  Both support the idea
of giving immigration authority to the police.  The candidates for Senate
support guestworker legislation, and support the idea of spending billions
of our tax dollars to build more walls on the border.

MIRAC invited Hatch and Klobuchar to participate in a community meeting to
clarify their positions in regards to immigration - neither of them
responded positively.

Seeing's how the candidates, be they Republicans or DFLers, support laws
that violate the human rights of millions of people, what are we going to
do?

Saturday, Nov. 4, MIRAC is coordinating a community meeting to talk about
this issue.  Invite everyone you know to participate.

DNC Deja Vu
2004 All Over Again

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has promised there will
not be a change of course in Iraq if the Democrats take back Congress.
Potential House leader Nancy Pelosi has assured voters that impeachment is
not in the cards for Bush, either. Yet the liberal establishment is
beaconing antiwar voters to clamor for the Democratic Party next Tuesday.
It seems like 2004 all over again.

I recently disparaged the positions of progressive media critic Jeff Cohen
and The Nation magazine for not supporting independent antiwar candidates,
and instead calling for more of the same: i.e. voting for the Democrats
even though we disagree with them on the war and a host of other issues.
If we want to take on Bush, they argue, the Democrats have to take back
Congress, and only then can we start to build a genuine progressive
movement.

In the meantime, however, the war will rage on and Bush will remain at the
helm of Empire with Congress's blessing. As the Washington Post reported
on August 27, of the 46 candidates in tight House races this year, 29
oppose a timetable for troop withdraw. That's a whopping 63% of Democrats
in hotly contested races who have exactly the same position on the war as
our liar-in-chief, George W. Bush.

Even so, Howard Dean offers up his own deceptive outlook, "[W]e will put
some pressure on him (Bush) to have some benchmarks, some timetables and a
real plan other than stay the course."

What? Who is going to do that? The 63% who oppose a timetable? And what
plan are the Democrats going to offer up? They openly refuse to back Rep.
Jack Murtha's call for redeployment, and won't even acknowledge Rep. Jim
McGovern's half-baked plea to replace US forces with another international
occupation cartel.

Besides, even if a withdraw plan made its way past the House, would the
Senate, even if controlled by Democrats, ever consider putting forward an
alternative agenda? It sure doesn't look that way. There is not one
Democratic Senator who wants an immediate, unconditional end to this war.

Perhaps even more discouraging this election season is the way in which
the media and mainstream antiwar movement have collaborated. They have
both willfully ignored candidates running against war supporters from
outside the Democratic Party.
[Locally the League of Women Voters, Minnesota Public Radio, and the
Minnesota Daily 2006 Election Guide have shut out the Green Party. -ed]

Peace Action, the self-proclaimed largest grassroots peace organization in
the US, has refused to supply antiwar activists with a guide to the
midterm elections. They claim to not have the funds to print them, but
still won't put a voting pamphlet on their website to inform voters that
they indeed have options on November 7.

The Nation magazine, despite an editorial last year which claimed they
would not support pro-war Democrats, has provided virtually no coverage of
third party antiwar campaigns. After an editorial staff meeting with Sen.
Hillary Clinton's antiwar challenger Howie Hawkins, The Nation still
wouldn't write a word about his campaign, even though he is receiving over
20% of the independent vote here in New York. Nor would the magazine
discuss Kevin Zeese's antiwar unity run in Maryland, where Zeese has
brought together a unique alliance of Green, Populists and Libertarians.

Then there is Aaron Dixon, an ex-Black Panther who is running perhaps the
most electric antiwar campaign in the country against Sen. Maria Cantwell.
Dixon's camp has been met with utter silence from the liberal antiwar
movement -- perhaps because several progressive philanthropists like Dal
LaMagna, support her campaign. And the list of forgotten candidates goes
on.

Predictably MoveOn.org and the liberal blogsphere like DailyKos would
never engage in a debate about the legitimacy of building an independent
antiwar movement, let alone a third party. Instead they'd rather throw
their energy into campaigns like Ned Lamont's disaster in Connecticut.
Since Ned defeated Sen. Lieberman in the primary he has changed his tune
on Iraq from reasonable opposition to all-out war hawk. But that's where
working within the Democratic Party will get you: nowhere.

So perhaps it is not "why" Peace Now and others in the liberal
establishment have silenced antiwar candidates, but "how". We know why:
they are professional liberals who see the Democratic Party as an
indispensable ally in the quest for grants, careers and cocktail party
networking.

However, the more theoretical among these liberal careerists have a
popular front philosophy: where they align with the liberal bourgeoisie
against the reactionary capitalists. But when push comes to shove the
liberals of the ruling elite always prefer repression to democracy --
something ol' Karl Marx recognized during the 1848 democratic revolutions
in Europe and the Left in the US should have recognized when the
industrial wing of the Republican Party sabotaged Radical Reconstruction
last century.

But that may be a bit too analytical for such an obvious crisis: the
Democrats and their patrons are part of the problem, not the solution.

[I ended my subscription to the Nation years ago. After each election it
tries to sound free and independent, so progressives will listen and
subscribe. Then just before each election they renege; the same old tired
lesser evil guff over and over again, and most of us wind up believing
it because it's less distressing than the truth.

The DP is kept filled with somewhat progressive people by their unending
ability to do this election the same thing they did last election, without
end, amen; all of which failed. So that's what faith is for - you can be a
bouncing born-again major party voter every two years. And what the powers
that be like is, they don't have to give you anything for doing it. And
they don't. Each two years as our reward for being good little voters,
they come and take more away. But we never catch on. Or if we do, we don't
do anything serious about it, so it goes on and on, and we have less and
less, and they have more and more. But god forbid we raise our voices. The
good citizen is seen but not heard, and even then only at a distance. -ed]

If Khatami Can Be Charged with Torture, Why Not Blair, Bush and Cheney?
Evil is as Evil Does

Compared to the current Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's
former president Muhammad Khatami is regarded in Western foreign affairs
circles as a moderate. When Khatami visited the US in September, he called
on the US and Iran to stop verbally assaulting each other in the interest
of dialogue that could build trust and eliminate the frictions between the
two countries. Khatami said that the precondition for dialogue was "to
eliminate the language of threat."

In an attempt to "resolve conflicts by talking, rather than by
aggression," the venerable Scottish University of St. Andrews invited
Khatami to the United Kingdom for an honorary degree, followed by a speech
at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. However, a
spanner was thrown into the works by two Iranian exiles, who claim to have
been unlawfully imprisoned and tortured in Iran during the period of
Khatami's presidency. Under Section 134 of Britain's Criminal Justice Act
of 1988, torture wherever committed in the world is criminal under British
law and triable in the UK. Thus, Khatami might still be arrested as he
tours the UK in the interest of opening communication.

If Khatami can be arrested in the UK for torture, how does British Prime
Minister Tony Blair escape arrest for the torture of Afghans and Iraqis by
coalition forces? Why are not US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice,
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President Richard Cheney, and
President George W. Bush arrested when they visit the UK?

Does the British law excuse Anglo-Americans from its reach? Does it
exclude government officials while they are in office and pursue them only
when they have become private citizens?

Or are we witnessing the operation of the neoconservative assumption that
there is one rule of law for the US and its allies and another rule for
countries that do not support the neocon agenda? Neocons maintain that
whatever the US and its allies or puppets do in the interest of US
hegemony is defensible and permissible but is a crime if any other country
does it.

When the president and vice president of the United States publicly defend
and advocate torture and ram torture legislation through the US Congress,
it is hypocrisy for the US to condemn others for torture.

Perhaps Americans don't notice, but the rest of the world does see the
double standard applied when Saddam Hussein is put on trial for war crimes
and crimes against humanity, while US, UK, and Israeli government
officials commit far greater crimes by illegally invading countries,
targeting civilian populations, and torturing detainees.

Considering the enormous bloodshed and destruction of civilian lives and
infrastructure in Afghanistan and Iraq by US and UK troops, why do British
left-wing academics and human rights activists want to help the
neoconservatives in the US and UK spread the war to Iran? Helping to
spread war is what the British left is doing when they agitate for the
arrest of Khatami while leaving Labour Party PM Tony Blair free to commit
more crimes against humanity. Could it be that the two Iranian exiles are
acting as neoconservative agents to block any possible rapprochement with
Iran? This is not a wild speculation in view of the role Iraqi exiles
played in deceiving the the American public and making false accusations
against Iraq that Bush used to justify his invasion.

The Iraq and Afghanistan invasions have turned out to be a catastrophe for
the US and UK as well as for the Iraqis and Afghans.
Only a totally deranged political leadership would want to spread the
catastrophe to Iran.

According to a BBC news report (October 30), British private security firm
personnel--mercenaries to some--outnumber British soldiers in Iraq six to
one. A British charity group accuses PM Tony Blair of "allowing mercenary
armies to operate completely outside the law."

In Britain it is no longer permissible to hunt foxes, because it is "cruel
and inhumane," but it is perfectly alright for private mercenaries and
British soldiers to murder Iraqi and Afghan men, women, and children for
the sake of Anglo-American-Israeli hegemony in the Middle East.

Saddam Hussein was overthrown and indicted, and Iraq largely destroyed, in
part because Saddam is "an evil man who tortured political opponents."
Evidence of US torture of Iraqis is all over the Internet in vivid photos.
According to Amnesty International, "Adequate safeguards against torture
and ill-treatment are not in place in Multinational Force detention
facilities, and thousands continue to be held without charge or trial."
The president and vice president of the US advocate torture not only of
Iraqis but also of everyone declared, correctly or incorrectly, by some US
government official to be a "terrorist suspect."

Why are not Bush, Cheney and Blair on trial? Their crimes dwarf any that
could possibly be attributed to Khatami.

The only possible answer is that "might makes right." Yet, Bush, Cheney
and Blair parade around draping themselves in moral justifications for
their inhumane deeds and despicable acts.

The fact that Americans tolerate crimes against humanity by their own
leaders is evidence that Americans are exceptional only in their hubris.
