The tour offers local residents an opportunity to find out how their neighbors are trimming their energy bills, increasing their energy independence and taking steps to address global warming. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in Solar Energy to view Solar installations and talk with the building owners about their experiences. Full details on the Solar Tour can be found on http://www.mnrenewables.org/events/solartour/index.php Contact: Doug Shoemaker (612) 308-4757 **** 5. SAT, OCT 6 10 AM TO NOON MERRIAM PARK LIBRARY CORNER OF FAIRVIEW AND MARSHALL STREETS ST. PAUL, MN AN INVITATION TO A "WALKING AWAY FROM THE KING" MEETING. This meeting is to call together people who want to consider ways that we can begin to "walk away from the king," (David Korten's phrase), the "king" being the current endless-growth, neoliberal economic/cultural paradigm that is destroying the environment, communities, and human aspirations globally. The confluence of peak oil, climate change, and economic turmoil has led to people all over the world working on creating new, localized communities able to adapt to future conditions. This meeting is for those who wish to pursue such a community here. Because all of us are dependent on the current economic cultural environment, it is difficult to see how we can move away from it in ways that truly might adapt to the future. The economic/business component of such a community will be very important. The Mondragon* Cooperative movement that started in the Basque region of Spain in the 1940s-1950s, based on cooperation, social justice, the primacy of labor, education of the whole person, among others, might serve as a beginning model for our time. This meeting is called for those who agree with the following premises, and are ready to act: 1. The entire world is facing an uncertain and drastically changed future with the confluence of climate change, an economic system built on once abundant and now increasingly scarce resources, and growing instability in financial markets. 2. Globalization has spread the ills of the neoliberal economic system around the world; local economies have almost disappeared. 3. This situation cannot be fixed by tweaking its cause: the economic growth/ consumption system. 4. People cannot respond meaningfully to drastic change without preparation. 5. People also cannot respond meaningfully if their sense of security depends on the current economic system; change must offer a means to achieve security outside this system. 6. Preparation for drastic change requires deep commitment and follow-through, and cannot be achieved by individuals acting alone. This will be a facilitated 2-hour meeting. We hope it will be the beginning of what becomes an "intentional Twin Cities community." Betty Dyson, Linda Littrell, Wilhelm and Leslie Reindl Wilderness Connections group **** 6. SUN, OCT 7 10:30 AM LAKE FELLOWSHIP EXCELSIOR 24575 GLEN ROAD, EXCELSIOR, MN CHOICE MAKES US HUMAN: REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND FAITH. Kelli Clement: Far from leaving our faith aside, we can use our Seven Principles as theological grounding to support reproductive health for all people. Kelli Clement is a seminarian at United Theological Seminary on the path to UU parish ministry. She is a facilitator in training for ASDIC - Antiracism Study Dialogue Circles, and is the co-chair of Seminarians for Choice at UTS. Kelli is a trustee and frequent worship leader at First Universalist Church, Minneapolis. **** 7. MON, OCT 8 6:30 PM PLYMOUTH CHURCH 1900 NICOLLET AVENUE MINNEAPOLIS THE NETWORK OF SPIRITUAL PROGRESSIVES-MINNESOTA will meet at Plymouth Church. (just south of downtown Minneapolis. Enter the door under the canopy off the rear parking lot and go downstairs to the Jackman Room.) Because of the rushed nature of our recent meetings, and to give us more time to talk with each other, we are returning to our format of the chapter meeting starting at 7:00. Join us at 6:30 if you can for snacks and conversation, and a brief orientation for new members. Also, of course, affinity groups might use this time for a brief check-in or to schedule a meeting on another day. We are delighted to welcome State Senator JOHN MARTY as the speaker at our October meeting. Most of us know of Senator Marty's strong, clear stands on progressive issues over the years, including during his campaign for governor in 1994. But when several of us met a few weeks ago with Senator Marty as part of our outreach to the legislature, we were immediately struck by the depth of his understanding of the close relationship between religion and politics. So we quickly asked him to come and speak with our colleagues, and he graciously agreed on short notice! Senator Marty's talk, like Phil Steger's a couple of months ago, promises not only to inspire us, but to further sharpen our understanding of the unique role we are able to play in the public dialogue. The October meeting will also include another in our series of short, "energetic" (to say the least!) videos from NSP national, and some time for small group interactions to let us connect with each other. **** 8. SUN, OCT 14 10:30 AM DAKOTA UU CHURCH 13001 COUNTY ROAD 5 BURNSVILLE, MN 55337 COMING OUT: A UNIVERSAL SACRED CALLING. Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew: The journey of GLBT folks--from initial awareness to naming the truth aloud, to celebrating the fullness of oneself in relationship--is a witness to authenticity. Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew, spiritual director and author of "Swinging on the Garden Gate", will explore how coming out is an integral spiritual growth for all people regardless of sexual identity. **** 9. SUN, OCT 14 12:30 PM FIRST UNIVERSALIST CHURCH 3400 DUPONT AVE S, MINNEAPOLIST CUMMINS ROOM LUNCH AND A MOVIE: DISENFRANCHISEMENT OF PEOPLE OF COLOR. Join us to see and discuss two short videos from PBS NOW with David Brancaccio: "Voter Caging" on voter disenfranchisement and "Block the Vote" on voter ID bills, and the disproportionate impact on people of color. This event complies with the Responsive Resolution we passed at General Assembly. Suitable for one-time visitors and Working Group team members. FFI: Jenny Thomas, jjthomas [at] skypoint.com or Carol Johnson 612-825-3322. **** 10. WED, OCT 17 7:30 PM MICHAEL SERVETUS UNITARIAN SOCIETY 6565 OAKLEY DRIVE FRIDLEY, MN 55432 FREE SCREENING OF BLACK GOLD: WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE. After oil, coffee is the most actively traded commodity in the world with $80 billion dollars in retail sales. But farmers make as little as three cents for every cup of coffee sold in the U.S. or Europe. Most of the rest of the money goes to the middlemen, especially the four giant food conglomerates which control the coffee market. Black Gold asks us "to wake up and smell the coffee," to face the unjust conditions under which our favorite drink is produced and to decide what we can do about it. Reviewers say that it is "riveting" and "transcends.the dry presentation qualities" of other documentaries. Join like-minded people in a FREE screening of this powerful film. FFI: (763) 571-3596 or email lculbert [at] comcast.net **** 11. WED, OCT 17 7:00 PM FIRST UNITARIAN SOCIETY FREE. DRAMATIC READING: THE CASE FOR WAR-WAS IT FRAUDULENT? United States v. George W. Bush et al. Six readers will present the evidence for an indictment of top government officials claiming they tricked the nation into the Iraq war, or, in legal terms, conspired to defraud the United States. The facts and circumstances are real. They are the result of two years researching the run-up to the war by a former federal prosecuting attorney with 20 years of experience and passion for justice, Elizabeth de la Vega. The script is adapted from her book, United States v. George W. Bush et al. The jury, randomly picked from the audience, decides whether there is enough evidence to indict. (If you would like your congregation to organize a reading of The Case For War, just ask one of the readers for a script, make copies, recruit six readers, and just do it informally. No rehearsal is necessary. The purpose is to enlighten.) FFI and/or RSVP: Madeline Simon Madeline-mpls [at] msn.com **** C. NATIONAL UU ADVOCACY **** 1. REV SINKFORD'S STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF BURMESE PEOPLE The people of Burma/Myanmar are in our thoughts and prayers. The images we've seen and the stories we've heard of the brave and inspirational witness offered by Buddhist religious leaders and citizens have touched our hearts and souls. Their peaceful protest against a cruel and repressive government is a notable moment in the multi-generational struggle for peace, liberty and justice in our world. The arrests, the killings, and all the forms of violence which they have suffered in response from the government are entirely unjustified. We stand in spiritual solidarity with the people of Burma as they risk their safety even as further governmental reprisals occur. We pray for their well-being, their vision, and their commitment. We call upon United States government and the United Nations to pressure the government of Myanmar to refrain from violent responses and to release political prisoners, including Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest for nearly seventeen years. Unitarian Universalists are asked to engage in advocacy for the people of Burma with their elected representatives, and to hold the people of Burma in their thoughts and prayers during worship this weekend, and in the weeks to come. Rev. William Sinkford **** 2. MON, OCT 8 FAST FOR PEACE. If you want to sign on to the Call for the Interfaith Fast, please write to Office [at] shalomctr.org and explain what religious congregation, organization, or community you are working with. PLEASE ALSO SIGN UP AND DESCRIBE THE EVENT YOU ARE PLANNING, BY CLICKING TO Http://www.INTERFAITHFAST.ORG **** 3. IMMIGRATION: THE DREAM ACT urgently needs your support! This act would create a path to citizenship for undocumented minors who have lived in the US for 5 years, have a high school diploma or GED, and good moral character. According to the National Immigration Law Center, "this week represents the best chance we will have this year to pass the DREAM Act in the Senate. We need to respond at a higher level than ever before." Please call or fax your Senators today and ask them to support the DREAM Act! http://nilc.org/immlawpolicy/DREAM/index.htm **** 4. GULF COAST REBUILDING. The Gulf Coast Recovery Act, S. 1668, recently passed in the House and is currently being considered in a Senate committee. The Act would establish a right to return for residents of public housing, add funds to the Road Home program, designate $1.7 billion for rental housing, and earmark millions for community development programs. Read more about the act and sign the Katrina Information Network's petition to encourage the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs to get the Gulf Coast Recovery Act moving! http://katrinaaction.org/node/278 D.
