TODAY IS WORLD AIDS ORPHANS DAY
By 2010 there is expected to be 100 million orphans and children affected by
AIDS. AIDS has ripped so many parents from their children's lives, leaving a
deep and painful void. Such voids may never be filled, but they can be
prevented. AIDS is 100% preventable. Please remember that as you read this
call to action.

The Washington Office is continuing its work to pass H.R. 1713, the
Protection Against Transmission of HIV for Women and Youth Act (PATHWAY).
There are currently 32 co-sponsors, with new members signing up every week.
This piece of legislation would dramatically improve our country's response
to the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. It would erase our current 1/3rd
requirement for HIV prevention funding to go to abstinence-until-marriage
programs. This change in policy would reflect a change in the moral
direction for this country, steering us towards a future in which all of the
world's persons, especially women and youth, are valued and given accurate
life-saving information.

Currently there are a variety of ways you can support this legislation.
First, take two minutes to send an e-mail to your representative. Second,
the UUA is participating in the "Ignorance Will Not Protect Us" postcard
campaign. If you would like to get 50-200 postcards addressed and signed by
your congregation or community, contact Adam Gerhardstein at
agerhardstein [at] uua.org or (202) 296-4672 ext. 21. This is an excellent way
to
educate your community and to make a real difference (I will hand deliver
the postcards to your member's office).
