MINNEAPOLIS 2014 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Best of Contemporary Cuban Cinema February 20th- March 27th February 18, 2014 MINNEAPOLIS- From February 20- March 27 the Minnesota Cuba Committee in partnership with the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) and the Minneapolis/St Paul Film Society presents an outstanding collection of Cuban cinema, featuring winners from past years' Latin American Film Festival in Havana. Four Cuban feature films and two Cuban documentaries will be screened at the Fifth Annual Cuban Film Festival. With the theme," Women and Afro Cubans in Cuban Cinema", the Cuban FilmFestival gives audiences an unprecedented opportunity to view a cross section of Cuban films. Screenings will take place at the St. Anthony Main Theatre complex on historic Main St., Minneapolis on the Mississippi Riverfront. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles. In order of showings the films are *City in Red* by Rebeca Chávez; *Nothing More *by Juan Carlos Cremata; *Portrait of Teresa *by Pastor Vega; *1912-Breaking the Silence *by Gloria Rolando; *One Way or Another *by Sara Gomez and* Van Van Fever *by Ian Padron will be presented February 20th-March 27th, Thursday evenings at 7:00 P.M. with one showing only. Minnesota Cuban Film Festival Committee member, Greg Klave, added that: "Cuban cinema has played a role in the development of women's rights and the struggle for racial equality in Cuba's Revolution. Its cinema industry unleashed new generations of creative energy by Cuban women and Afro-Cubans, as they turned the cameras on the process they were living, and told the Cuban people, and anyone else who was interested, who they are and what they are doing. Cuba continues to produce films that deserve to be known more widely and we hope this 5th Annual Cuban Film Festival will contribute to that end." The festival will present general audience discussions at Pracna on Main after each showing facilitated by Giselle Garcia, Cuban student studying film at St Thomas University; Amy Kaminsky, Professor of Women's Studies, and Rose Brewer, Professor of African-American and American Studies, at the University of Minnesota; Valerie Deus, Instructor of Literature at Minneapolis Community and Technical College; August Nimtz ,Professor of Political Science at the University of Minnesota , Gary Prevost, Professor of Political Science and Latin American Studies at St. John's University and College of St. Benedict. The closing reception will showcase live Cuban music by the band Cubanía, featuring Viviana Pintado, Gloria Rivera and Shai Hayo, and take place at Pracna on Main on St. Anthony's Main Street from 9-12 PM on March 27th after the 7:00 PM showing of the film, Van Van Fever, a film about Cuba's most famous and beloved Salsa band, Los Van Van. The Festival's sponsors are Dialog One, Victor's 1959 Café, Acentos, Inc., University of St Thomas, International Leadership Program, Center for Global Education, Augsburg College, Episcopal Church in Minnesota, ECMN Minnesota-Cuba Ministry, Seward Co-op, High Graphics Design, Upper Midwest Witness for Peace, Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul, De León & Nestor Attorneys at Law. Tickets are $8.50 and $6.00 for seniors, students and film society members for each show and can be bought at the door on the night of the movie. Parking can be found in the ramp behind the St. Anthony Main Theater on 2nd Ave. NE and 2nd St. NE. or nearby streets. The theater is handicap accessible.
