Pastor Luis Alvarenga participated in a solidarity delegation to Honduras early this year. The delegation visited the area of Bajo Aguan, which has been hard hit by repression against the struggle of the campesinos to regain their land. Many have been killed, and many arrested and tortured. Hear about the resistance of the Honduran people to the military coup two years ago, removing President Manuel Zelaya, who has just returned from exile May 28. All are welcome. Currently he is on the Board of Directors of the American Refugee Committee and United Nations Association of MN. He co-founded the Iranian-American Society of MN and has had leadership roles in over 40 civic and advocacy groups since coming to Minnesota 41 years ago. See 3 1/2 minutes video of Mr. Shahidi speaking on chain reaction to President Bush's referring to Iran as part of the axis of evil: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ5jxTmj9C8 Mr. Shahidi will give a profit-loss analysis of some past wars, the current wars, and future wars. Not all wars are won militarily by one side or the other. The three wars which the U.S. is conducting now and a possible fourth one with Iran are and will be very destructive but inconclusive. --------3 of 7-------- From: lydiahowell [at] comcast.net Subject: Shut down, rise up! 7pm ORGANIZING MEETING TONIGHT Tuesday, June 28th, at 7:00pm (childcare available) @ the PPNA building, 821 E 35th St, Minneapolis We're converging under the banner of "Shut down, rise up!" to respond to the Minnesota's expected government shutdown, and we'd like you to join us. Tens of thousands of public employees could be laid off, and cutbacks on services ranging from transportation to health coverage, food stamps to nursing homes, homeless shelters to the court system could have devastating effects on many more. As anti-authoritarians, we recognize both the immediate need people have for the government to return to its regular operations (for many, this is a matter of survival), and also the fact that the government and corporations work in tandem to exploit our communities and strip them of self-sufficiency. As invested members of our communities, we're responding by starting to address the needs and issues arising from the shutdown while also presenting our own analysis of the system that has produced this crisis. We are converging to pool resources, services, and political actions that will address some of the immediate needs created by the shutdown. We intend to occupy a shared physical space for the purposes of this resource-sharing and community building, and also to maintain an internet information hub on actions and alternative services related to the shutdown. We are an open group and welcome anyone who is interested in exploring radical, anti-authoritarian responses to this government-created crisis and in working together to create alternatives to the capitalist system. If you'd like to get involved in organizing, come to our next meeting! The Twin Cities region has one of the highest rates of racial employment disparities in the nation. We know that low-income communities suffer from economic disinvestment, poor transportation options and high energy costs. Amidst all of the facts, what motivate us to organize, to fight and to change systems so that the future of our region reflects the social justice that we value? For many organizers, their faith is that driving force. Join us for our next Organizer Roundtable as we feature the work of the faith community in organizing. We will learn how groups around the region are motivated by faith to tackle the root causes of poverty and racism, and the tools that they are using to do it. http://www.thedatabank.com/dpg/_public/ct.asp?aacwc=3715532252570080344259800191&ct=event06&redir=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ethedatabank%2Ecom%2Fdpg%2F322%2Fmtglistproc%2Easp%3Fformid%3Devent%26caleventid%3D19502 Organizer Roundtable: Lessons from Faith-Based Organizers Noon to 1:30pm Wednesday, June 29 Franklin Library 1314 East Franklin Ave Minneapolis, MN 55404 Presenters: Alison Killeen, Joint Religious Legislative Coalition organizer Adam Robinson, Catholic Charities Office for Social Justice public policy organizer Melissa Rudnick, Jewish Community Action community organizer Ralph Wyman, Minnesota Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Alliance director Organizer Roundtables are free, but http://www.thedatabank.com/dpg/_public/ct.asp?aacwc=3715532252570080344259800191&ct=event06&redir=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ethedatabank%2Ecom%2Fdpg%2F322%2Fmtglistproc%2Easp%3Fformid%3Devent%26caleventid%3D19502 registration is required. AIPAC, or the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, describes itself as the most important organization affecting the U.S. relationship with Israel. AIPAC has one objective: strengthening American support for Israel. Because our politicians are fearful of confronting AIPAC, they give in to AIPAC's demands no matter what the impact on the U.S. or the Mideast might be, enabling Israel to commit flagrant human rights abuses and violations of international law. AIPAC supports endless conflict in the Middle East by lobbying for billions of dollars in U.S. military aid to Israel and continued occupation of Palestinian land. AIPAC works to insure that Israel is provided with U.S. military aid and weapons at the cost of more than $3 billion each year. Join others in reminding AIPAC, and especially the politicians that support it, that we stand on the side of human rights and peace, and we demand an end to the unqualified support of Israeli policies. We stand for a future of peace and justice, not war and occupation. Sponsored by: the Coalition for Palestinian Rights (CPR).
